Aquariums are divided into 2 general types:
- Cold water
- As a warm water aquarium.
1. Cold water aquarium
The least maintenance and least expensive aquarium is the cold water aquarium. Coldwater aquariums do not have electric heaters to regulate the water temperature, so the water in the aquarium will remain cold or at ambient temperature (room temperature ~ +18 degrees Celsius). For a Mongolian like me who likes to be cool, of course it is better to have a heater, and the stable temperature will reduce the chances of getting sick.
Cold water aquariums include fish and plants from temperate climates. Fish include Rainbow shiner, White Cloud Mountain minnow, Gold fish, etc.
The advantage of cold water aquariums is that they are less sensitive to changes and adaptable plants, so it is especially suitable for beginners who are interested in aquariums.

2. Warm water aquarium
A warm water aquarium is equipped with a thermostat (adjustable water heater) that simulates constant heat, tropical and subtropical habitat conditions. The biological diversity of potential inhabitants of warm water aquariums is enormous, and the beautiful colors and shapes of tetras (colorful neon species = salmler), catfish (wels) or cichlids (colorful ciclids) make every aquarist's heart beat faster.
Warm water aquariums are more complicated to maintain and service than cold water aquariums due to their special requirements for water temperature and water quality.
A rich selection of fish and plants, beauty and splendor of color make a warm water aquarium a real highlight and attention, and require a lot of care, especially colorful plants that show their beautiful colors only in good light. The most widely used type of warm water aquarium is the mixed aquarium (see below).

Warm water aquariums are divided into 5 types:

1. Mixed aquarium
The most widespread use. In this type of aquarium, regardless of the area and the temperature and cold zone, it is mainly to live together with the ability to live in the same temperature of the water. They have a social tendency to fish, especially swarming, which is one of their unique characteristics. Moreover, the well-stocked aquarium is very attractive. Mainly sword carriers, platys and neons. The dimensions of gregariousness (social tendency), water temperature, and hardness should be at least roughly matched.
2. South American or Amazon aquarium
This type of aquarium should be set up to suit the climate of the tropical rainforests of South America and the Amazon River. In other words, the heat of the water should be high and the hardness should be low. I don't know the Mongolian names, and I have no interest in making them up, so I put them here directly in German and English. There are many of this type of fish, but the most widespread in aquariums are Salmler, Skalare (Scalars), Panzerwelse (armored catfish) und Antennenwelse (antennae catfish), Diskus- (discus cichlids) and Zwergbuntbarsche (dwarf cichlids).
It should be kept at a constant 24°C – 27°C and the water hardness should be low to medium hardness.
3. Tanganjika to Malawi aquarium
Tanganyika and Malawi are large freshwater lakes in southeastern Africa. Both are rich in fish and flora, which cannot be found anywhere else in the world. The coast is rocky and the water composition is high in mineral density and extremely alkaline. If you can adjust the composition of the water, you can have many colorful cichlids under the name of beautiful life. The plant, however, has one disadvantage: it does not establish well. The following features should also be taken into account: In addition to the above-mentioned water composition, some cichlids require a certain living space (if this is reduced, they will fight to the death), prepare holes in the rocks to hide in, and if you are interested in living in a mixed environment, there are many other issues, such as paying attention to the number of males and drugs, combining suitable species, etc. It also likes to dig, so it's important to tread on fine gravel or sand.
4. Sea water aquarium
The aquarium I spend the longest time looking at in a pet store is the most maintenance and expensive aquarium of its kind, let alone in real life. It's the only kind of aquarium I've never built, so it's better to hire someone to take care of it. Because it requires a high level of knowledge about seawater, flora and fauna, and preparing water is extremely difficult.
However, a well-prepared aquarium can be the most beautiful and beautiful aquarium with many colors. Amazing! I'm going to have an aquarium like this because I'm retired, haha.
5. Nano aquarium
The species I have right now and the variety of small fishes and shrimps make this aquarium very interesting with their many colors. Mainly 12-54 liter size and cubic (Nano-Cube) shape. I love the sheer length. The following types are mainly suitable for this aquarium:
- Small shrimps (red-fire shrimp)
- Various snails (post horn snail)
- Dwarf crayfish
- It is said that small fish should not be smaller than 54 liters. Being the smallest in size, it is difficult to find suitable plants and fish, and constant gardening work is required, as well as constant attention to the quality of the water composition.
My next personal project is to bring to life a custom-made aquarium on my bookshelf, at least 1 meter long, but narrow (at most 25 cm wide) and tall enough. This plan coincides with the plan to visit my mother next year, so I made a compromise right now. decided to wait until next year. From experience, if you do it well, there are always additional costs.
